Nested Socio-Ecological Maps as a Spatial Planning Instrument for Estuary Conservation and Ecosystem-Based Management

چکیده
Estuaries are socio-ecological systems that can be represented as a holistic combination of biotic and abiotic conditions in spatially explicit units defined by: (i) the ecotope, integration physiotope (abiotic-homogeneous units) biotope (biotic-homogeneous units), (ii) anthrotope, synthesizing data on human drivers ecological change. Nested physiotopes were identified an estuary using hierarchical approach integrates information about eight abiotic, biologically meaningful, variables. The Zostera noltei was delimited potential distribution model species overlapped with map to characterize ecotopes. anthrotope estimated cumulative impacts anthropic activities over diversity Z. ecotopes compared estimate pressures this species. methodology resulting maps provide flexible interdisciplinary tools for conservation, management, education research.

Essential ecological insights for marine ecosystem-based management and marine spatial planning
The abrupt decline in the sea’s capacity to provide crucial ecosystem services requires a new ecosystembased approach for maintaining and recovering biodiversity and integrity. Ecosystems are places, so marine spatial planners and managers must understand the heterogeneity of biological communities and their key components (especially apex predators and structure-forming species), and of key pr...
متن کاملAssessment and Spatial Planning of Landscape Ecological Connectivity for Biodiversity Management (Case Study: Qazvin Province)
Habitat and ecosystem fragmentation and, consequently, the loss of landscape connectivity are major causes of biodiversity destruction, leading to disruption of material, energy, and information flow at the landscape scale. Given the importance of this issue, the current study aimed to evaluate the ecological connectivity and spatial planning of Qazvin Province, in order to re-establish and pro...
متن کاملSystematic Planning and Ecosystem-Based Management as Strategies to Reconcile Mangrove Conservation with Resource Use
About 120 million people worldwide live within 10 km of large mangrove forests, and many of them directly depend on the goods and services provided by these ecosystems. However, it remains unclear how to synchronize ecological definitions and legal conservation strategies regarding mangroves, especially in developing countries, such as Brazil. The influence of human populations’ socio-economic ...
متن کاملConservation Planning for Ecosystem Services
Despite increasing attention to the human dimension of conservation projects, a rigorous, systematic methodology for planning for ecosystem services has not been developed. This is in part because flows of ecosystem services remain poorly characterized at local-to-regional scales, and their protection has not generally been made a priority. We used a spatially explicit conservation planning fra...
متن کاملA Socio-Ecological Approach for Identifying and Contextualising Spatial Ecosystem-Based Adaptation Priorities at the Sub-National Level
Climate change adds an additional layer of complexity to existing sustainable development and biodiversity conservation challenges. The impacts of global climate change are felt locally, and thus local governance structures will increasingly be responsible for preparedness and local responses. Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) options are gaining prominence as relevant climate change solutions. ...
